WFK Youth Volunteers Abroad

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has been implementing the university student overseas volunteer program with various organizations under the slogan 'For A Better World With World Friends Korea'. As a member of the Korea University Council For Social Service, Hanyang University has been recommending passionate and motivated students for short- or mid-term youth volunteer programs, and in 2023, a total of four students were dispatched to four countries: Uganda, Laos, East Timor, and Rwanda.
WFK Youth Volunteers are selected twice a year, in April and May and October, and are sent to Asia and Africa to develop multicultural sensitivity and enhance personal competence through activities such as educational service and cultural exchange.

What is World Friends Korea?

World Friends Korea is the new name of the Korean government's overseas volunteer program that helps neighbors around the world and enhances Korea's brand value, and was launched in 2009 by consolidating the overseas volunteer programs of each executive branch of the government.

University-developed volunteer abroad programs

Students can apply individually to participate in an overseas volunteer program, but if they want to form a club or team, they can submit a plan to the Korea University Council For Social Service for consideration.
The contest, which is held in April, May, and September, allows clubs or teams to select a country they want to volunteer in and plan their own activities and schedule.

It is important to remember that selected teams will be able to use the WFK name officially and will be representing Hanyang University and Korea, so they must have a cohesive and differentiated activity plan to be selected.

In 2023, the university-developed volunteer abroad program was led by students from the School of Architecture and the Department of Architecture and planned a volunteer program connected to the Samsung Hope School in Bac Giang Province, Vietnam.
Despite various concerns due to the nature of Vietnam as a communist country, the 14 students performed well and returned healthy after 10 days of construction, hard work, and educational service.
In this activity, the volunteers installed a roof over the outdoor water fountain at Samsung Hope School in Bac Giang Province, taught Korean, science, and physical education classes to about 200 Vietnamese youth, and had a meaningful time exchanging traditional Korean and Vietnamese culture.
