Professor - Landscape & Urban Ecosystems Lab
Prof. Gunwoo Kim
Gunwoo Kim is Director of Landscape & Urban Ecosystems Lab and Assistant Professor, Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea. He received his BLA (2008) degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, MLA (2011) degree from Seoul National University, and Ph.D. (2015) degree in Architecture and Design Research from Virginia Tech. He worked as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Arizona State University (2015-2017) and an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture (Tenure-Track) at North Carolina A&T State University (2017-2018).
The overarching theme of his teaching and research is to study and understand the complex interrelationships between ecosystem services and human health and well-being and to find solutions or alternatives to support sustainable futures. His research focuses on urban vegetation and its effects on environmental quality and human health, in particular the urban ecosystem services provided by green infrastructure. Current his research examines the contribution to urban ecosystems made by green infrastructure and ways to value the vegetation growing on vacant land in our cities, and seeks to identify alternative strategies for utilizing these spaces for short and long-term urban regeneration and renewal. A paper on this project was published to the Urban Forestry & Urban Greening (2015), which recently won a Virginia ASLA Research Award. He has been award a grant for project “Assessing Multiple Ecosystem Services in Urban Green Infrastructure to Support of Sustainable Community in Arizona by APS Endowment for Sustainable Design Research ($14,824.51). He is an invited reviewer of Landscape and Urban Planning and Urban Forestry & Urban Greening.
Passionate about sharing ecological design approaches and models, he has extensive teaching experience, having taught site analysis, planning and design, sustainable landscape design seminar, ecological design, GIS and design foundation courses to name a few and he has collaboration experience working in teams at the USDA Forest Service. His interest here is to explore the role of landscape architecture in supporting urban sustainability to improve environmental quality and human health and well-being.
He is the author of 9 peer-reviewed articles with several more in progress. He has made more than 32 international presentations related to urban ecosystem services, green infrastructure and human health and well-being.
Expertise
The areas of expertise he can bring to the Hanyang University are the modeling of ecosystem services in manner that provides information helpful to landscape architects and planners such as the effects of trees on environmental quality, particularly air quality and greenhouse gases, and how to assess urban vegetation systems using aerial and ground-based techniques.
